Dumbphones and flip phones with WhatsApp

Checked against the makers' own pages · Last reviewed October 15, 2026

WhatsApp supports only Android phones running 6.0 or newer and iPhones, and its support for KaiOS, the system on TCL's flip phones, has ended. So no KaiOS flip phone, Nokia S30+ keypad phone, Light Phone, Sunbeam F1 Pro or Punkt MP02 can run WhatsApp. The basic phones in our database that let you install Android apps are Duoqin's Qin F21 Pro (standard edition), a Chinese Android keypad phone, and the Mudita Kompakt, where you sideload Android apps yourself and Mudita doesn't promise they will work. Neither maker says WhatsApp works. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

WhatsApp needs
Android 6.0 or newer, or an iPhone with iOS 15.1 or newer (iOS 15.5 from Nov. 30, 2026), and a number that can receive SMS or calls. [1]
KaiOS
WhatsApp says its support on KaiOS devices has ended. [2]
Signal
Android 6.0 or later; Signal says it is focused only on its Android, iOS and Desktop apps. [10][11]

What WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram require

WhatsApp. WhatsApp's help center says it supports "Android phones running OS 6.0 and newer" and "iPhones running iOS 15.1 and newer," and that starting Nov. 30, 2026, only iOS 15.5 and newer will be supported. Your phone "must be able to receive SMS or calls" when you verify your number. WhatsApp's Android download page offers the app file directly (version 2.26.32.84, Android 6.0 or above, as of Oct. 15, 2026) as well as pointing to Google Play. You can link up to four other devices, such as a computer, but WhatsApp says "you'll still need your primary phone to register your WhatsApp account and link new devices."

KaiOS. WhatsApp's help center says: "WhatsApp support on devices that run KaiOS has ended." It tells KaiOS users to copy important information off the phone because there is no backup or restore from these devices.

Custom systems. WhatsApp says "custom ROMs and rooted phones aren't supported by WhatsApp." A custom ROM is a system you install in place of the one the phone shipped with.

Signal. Signal's support site says to confirm "your Android device is running Android 6.0 or later" and install from Google Play. Signal also offers an Android app file for "advanced users with special needs." It says it is "currently focused exclusively on the Android, iOS, and Desktop applications," so there is no KaiOS version.

Telegram. Telegram offers its Android app as a direct download from telegram.org. [1][2][10][11][12][13][14][15]

"No" means the phone can't install apps, or runs a system WhatsApp doesn't support. "Not stated" means neither the maker nor WhatsApp says. Nothing here is WhatsApp's own statement about a specific phone model. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23]

KaiOS flip phones: WhatsApp has ended

WhatsApp used to support KaiOS phones; its help center now says "WhatsApp is no longer available on devices running KaiOS" and that "all impacted users were directly notified ahead of time." TCL lists KaiOS as the system on its Flip 3, Flip Pro (KaiOS 3.0) and FLIP 4 5G (KaiOS 4.0). TCL still lists Google Search and Google Maps on the Flip Pro and a carousel of "some of the most popular Google apps" on the FLIP 4 5G, but not WhatsApp. [2][3][16][17]

Mudita Kompakt: sideloading at your own risk

Mudita says the Kompakt "does not include a dedicated messaging app like WhatsApp or Signal" and has no app store. Because MuditaOS K "is based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP)," you can install Android app files (APKs) yourself from a computer with Mudita's Mudita Center app over USB-C.

Mudita's cautions: sideloaded apps "are not optimized for the Kompakt and might not always work as intended," MuditaOS K "does not support Google Services," so apps that depend on them "likely won't be able to work correctly," and problems caused by sideloaded apps, such as battery drain, aren't covered by the warranty. Mudita's support articles don't say whether WhatsApp, Signal or Telegram work. It says adding messaging apps itself "will depend on technical feasibility and user feedback." [9][20]

Android keypad phones: Qin

Duoqin's Qin phones are keypad phones with small touchscreens that run Android, made for the Chinese market. Duoqin's F21 Pro page lists Android 11 ("安卓11系统") and two editions: a student edition that "only supports downloading apps from Duoqin's official app store" and a standard edition with "unrestricted downloads" that "can install any app" (可任意安装APP). Its comparison table lists the F21 Pro in the standard edition only; the F21 Pro+ offers both, chosen when you first activate the phone, and Duoqin warns that once you choose the student edition you can't change it. Android 11 is above WhatsApp's Android 6.0 minimum, but Duoqin doesn't mention WhatsApp; its page promotes WeChat.

The F22 Pro page describes an anti-addiction student phone with WeChat and app installs from "a dedicated app store developed by Duoqin" (多亲开发的专属正版应用市场). Both are China models, so check where each is sold and its US band support on the phone's own page before buying one. [1][8][21]

Questions people ask

Is there a flip phone with WhatsApp?

Not among KaiOS flip phones any more: WhatsApp says its support on KaiOS has ended. WhatsApp needs Android 6.0 or newer or an iPhone, so a flip or keypad phone has to run Android with app installs allowed. In our database the options are Duoqin's Qin F21 Pro, an Android keypad phone whose standard edition installs any app, or sideloading on the Mudita Kompakt, which Mudita doesn't guarantee. Neither maker says WhatsApp works. [1][2][8][9]

Does the Light Phone have WhatsApp?

No. Light says there is not currently a way to call or message with Signal or WhatsApp on the Light Phone III or Light Flip, though it may be possible in future software updates. [5][18]

Can I use WhatsApp on a KaiOS phone like the TCL Flip?

No. WhatsApp's help center says WhatsApp is no longer available on devices running KaiOS. [2]

Can I use WhatsApp only on a computer, without a smartphone?

No. WhatsApp says you need your primary phone to register your account and to link other devices such as a computer. [12]

Do any dumbphones support Signal?

Not the official Signal app. Punkt's MP02 has Pigeon, which uses the Signal Protocol to talk to Signal-compatible users; Punkt said Pigeon may be temporarily unavailable from Sept. 15, 2026, and as of Oct. 15, 2026 had not given a restart date. Sunbeam says it is developing a Signal-compatible app called Dewdrop for select new models. [6][7][24]
