LineageOS is a community-built Android distribution that owners install on phones, tablets and TV boxes from dozens of brands. It contains no Google apps or services and no microG: you either use it Google-free, add a Google Apps package yourself, or add microG yourself. LineageOS 24.0, based on Android 17, launched on October 11, 2026. [1][2][3][4][5][6]

What LineageOS is

LineageOS calls itself "a free and open-source operating system for various devices, based on the Android mobile platform." It will turn 10 years old on December 24, 2026. Every device is maintained by open-source contributors, and the project does not take device requests: a device is supported only if someone brings it up and keeps it to the project's standards.

Other projects build on it. SHIFT, for example, says its ShiftOS G is based, depending on the device, on an Android base provided by Qualcomm or by LineageOS. [1][5][6][7]

Supported devices

The LineageOS device list covers phones, tablets, Android TV boxes and handheld consoles. On October 15, 2026 we counted 341 entries not marked as discontinued (out of 631 listed), from makers including Google, Samsung, OnePlus, Xiaomi, Motorola, Sony, Fairphone, Nothing and SHIFT. The list warns: "Devices not listed are not supported," and a nearly identical model is not enough.

Examples of current entries: every Pixel from the Pixel 6 to the Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold and 10a; the Fairphone 3, 4, 5 and Gen. 6; the SHIFTphone 8 (its wiki page lists LineageOS 24.0 as the current version); and Samsung Galaxy phones up to the Galaxy S23.

LineageOS 24.0 "will launch building for a decent selection of devices," with more added as maintainers get them ready. Phones with old Linux kernels (versions 4.4 and 4.9) stay on LineageOS 22.2 (Android 15), which keeps getting builds and monthly security patches until Google stops publishing Android 15 security bulletins. Builds come out on a rolling weekly schedule, and a skipped week doesn't mean support was dropped. [2][5][6][8]

Installing it

You install LineageOS yourself by following the installation guide on your device's wiki page; the project says those instructions "remain the default and supported path for each device." In October 2026 it added browser-based flash tools at flash.lineageos.org for some installation methods (ADB, Fastboot, Amlogic and Samsung Odin protocols), as an extra option.

You need an unlockable bootloader (the lock that controls which operating system a phone will start). The FAQ warns against re-locking it afterwards: "Few devices allow for it and even less work properly after that." The project also doesn't support rooting. [5][6]

How it compares to stock Android

Google apps and sign-in. LineageOS has no Google Play Store, Gmail, Maps or Google Play Services. The wiki says "due to licensing restrictions, these apps cannot come pre-installed" and that they are "not required to boot or run LineageOS." If you want them, you flash a Google Apps package (the wiki links MindTheGapps for LineageOS 24) in recovery right after installing LineageOS and before first boot; otherwise you must factory reset. LineageOS says these packages "are not supported in any way by LineageOS."

microG. LineageOS doesn't include microG, the open-source replacement for parts of Google Play Services. Its FAQ only notes that "push notifications require GApps or MicroG."

Push notifications. Without GApps or microG, apps that rely on Google's push service may not get notifications.

Banking and payment apps. LineageOS says some devices report their bootloader-unlock and verity status during boot, and "we don’t purposefully remove those flags, as it isn’t our place to lie about security features," so some devices don't pass Google's Play Integrity check, which apps can use to test the device. See our banking apps guide.

App stores. Without GApps you install apps from F-Droid, Aurora Store or downloaded APK files.

Android developer verification. In a July 2026 post, LineageOS said Google's new developer-verification requirement "will not affect LineageOS directly," because the check is done by a separate Google app that only certified devices with Google Mobile Services (GMS) have, and "we have not ever, nor do we intend to ever, ship GMS." It warned that a GApps package could choose to bundle that app. See our developer verification guide.

Built-in apps. LineageOS ships its own apps, among them the Aperture camera, Glimpse gallery, Twelve music player, Jelly browser, the new Canvas image editor (October 2026) and the Seedvault backup app. [3][4][5][6]

Security updates

With the 24.0 release, LineageOS said security patches from August 2025 to October 2026 had been merged into LineageOS 18.1 through 24.0. It sets the security patch level to match Google's bulletins on branches Google still publishes bulletins for, "which as of writing is Android 14 (LineageOS 21) and newer." The home page promises "monthly security updates to every supported device." The FAQ says a too-old (or too-new) vendor, modem or bootloader can block installation and that the right stock image to flash first "should be listed on the device’s wiki page." [1][5][6]

Project status

Active. LineageOS 23 (Android 16) was announced in October 2025 and LineageOS 24.0 (Android 17) on October 11, 2026, which the project called "early this year." The project is funded by donations through PayPal and Patreon; LineageOS LLC "is not a 501(c)(3) non-profit." [1][6][9]

Questions people ask

Does LineageOS come with Google apps?

No. Google's apps can't be preinstalled for licensing reasons. You can flash a third-party Google Apps package such as MindTheGapps right after installing LineageOS, before first boot. [3]

Does LineageOS include microG?

No. LineageOS ships neither Google Mobile Services nor microG. Its FAQ says push notifications require GApps or microG. [4][5]

What Android version is LineageOS 24?

LineageOS 24.0 is based on Android 17. It was announced on Oct. 11, 2026. [6]

Will banking apps work on LineageOS?

Some may not. LineageOS doesn't hide a device's unlocked-bootloader status, so some devices don't pass Google's Play Integrity check. [5]
