How to buy a GrapheneOS phone

Checked against the makers' own pages · Last reviewed October 15, 2026

There are two ways to get a GrapheneOS phone: buy a supported Google Pixel and install GrapheneOS yourself for free, or buy a Pixel that a third-party seller has already set up. GrapheneOS itself recommends the first. Either way, as of Oct. 15, 2026 that means a Pixel 8 or newer (but not the Pixel 11, which isn't supported yet), bought unlocked rather than from a carrier. Option 1: Buy a Pixel and install GrapheneOS yourself

GrapheneOS's "official recommendation is to buy a supported device and install GrapheneOS yourself." It says its web installer is easy to use and that doing it yourself "will also likely be a lot cheaper," since you don't pay a seller's premium.

What you need, per the installer page: a computer (Windows 10 or 11, a recent macOS, several Linux versions, ChromeOS, or another Android phone) with at least 2GB of free memory and 32GB of free storage, a good USB-C cable, and a supported browser such as Chrome, Edge, Chromium or Brave. The installer unlocks the phone's bootloader (the program that starts the operating system), flashes GrapheneOS, and has you lock the bootloader again at the end.

Before you start, "OEM unlocking" has to be switched on in the phone's Developer options. On models that can be sold locked by carriers, the phone checks online whether it was a carrier-locked unit before it allows this. [1][3]

Option 2: Buy a phone with GrapheneOS preinstalled

Several companies sell Pixels with GrapheneOS already installed. GrapheneOS says this is allowed if they make clear they are not GrapheneOS, and that it is "not affiliated with or endorse any company selling devices with GrapheneOS."

If you buy one anyway, the project says to:

  1. Make sure it isn't an end-of-life or near end-of-life phone (stick to the recommended list below).
  2. Check that it runs genuine GrapheneOS by comparing the verified boot key hash, as shown in its install guide.
  3. Factory reset it from recovery before using it.
  4. Optionally, set up attestation with the Auditor app.

Sellers are listed under "Where to buy" below. [1]

Which phones to choose

GrapheneOS "strongly" recommends only these phones, which have a seven-year support guarantee from launch and hardware memory tagging: Pixel 10a, Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Pixel 10 Pro XL, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10, Pixel 9a, Pixel 9 Pro Fold, Pixel 9 Pro XL, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9, Pixel 8a, Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel 8.

Official GrapheneOS updates for Pixels "typically end shortly after" Google's minimum support ends. Older supported phones (Pixel 6 and 7 series, Pixel Fold, Pixel Tablet) have earlier end dates; for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro it is October 2026. [1][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]

Phones to avoid

- Carrier versions of Pixels. GrapheneOS warns that "devices sold in partnership with specific carriers may be locked by the carrier, which will prevent installing GrapheneOS," and that this "is primarily an issue with US carriers." Its installer page explains that carrier units have a carrier ID that disables bootloader unlocking; the carrier "may be able to remotely disable this, but their support staff may not be aware." Its advice: "Get a carrier agnostic device." The Google Store shows carrier deals (for example Verizon and AT&T financing offers on the Pixel 10a) next to an "Unlocked" option. For GrapheneOS, choose Unlocked. - The Pixel 11 series (for now). Google's Pixel 11 phones went on sale in August 2026, but they are not on GrapheneOS's supported list as of Oct. 15, 2026. In September the project said it may finish Pixel 11 support if Google ships working memory tagging support, after its Motorola work. - End-of-life Pixels. GrapheneOS no longer supports the Pixel 5a and older. - Current Motorola phones. No Motorola phone is supported yet. GrapheneOS says the 2026 Motorola Signature, Razr Fold and Razr Ultra lack features it requires. [1][2][3][4][12][13]

Where to buy a phone with GrapheneOS preinstalled

These third-party sellers listed GrapheneOS phones on Oct. 15, 2026. They are examples, not endorsements, and GrapheneOS endorses none of them.

- Nitrokey (Germany) sells Pixel 10 and 10a models as "NitroPhones," from 649.00 € for the NitroPhone 10a to 1,999.00 € for the NitroPhone 10 Pro Fold. It says it delivers worldwide and its price "contains all duties and taxes" (some countries need an individual quote). - ameriDroid, a US seller, lists refurbished Pixels with GrapheneOS from $645 (Pixel 8a) to $1,695 (Pixel 10 Pro XL). - PrivacyPortal (UK) lists new and used Pixels with GrapheneOS (for example, a preloved Pixel 8 from £269.99) and ships to the US. It notes its phones are UK/EU models and that "some carriers restrict VoLTE on imported Pixels by allowing only the IMEI ranges of models sold locally." (VoLTE means voice calls over the 4G LTE network.) Its list also includes Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 models, which have earlier support end dates (Pixel 6: October 2026; Pixel 7: October 2027, per GrapheneOS). [1][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]

Coming in 2027: a Motorola option

Motorola and the GrapheneOS Foundation announced a partnership on March 2, 2026. GrapheneOS says the Motorola Signature 27, announced in September 2026, "will be the initial supported phone," with support expected "at some point in 2027 for the initial flagship, hopefully in the first half of the year." It also says devices sold with GrapheneOS installed "are planned but the details of that still need to be worked out." [21][22][23][24]

Questions people ask

Can I buy a GrapheneOS phone directly from GrapheneOS?

No. The project doesn't sell phones. It recommends buying a supported Pixel and installing GrapheneOS yourself with its web installer. [1]

Can I install GrapheneOS on a Verizon Pixel?

Possibly not. GrapheneOS warns that Pixels sold through carriers may be locked so you cannot unlock the bootloader, mainly with US carriers, and advises buying a carrier-agnostic (unlocked) phone. [1][3]

Is there a budget GrapheneOS phone?

GrapheneOS has called a used Pixel 8 or Pixel 8a a good budget device. As of Oct. 15, 2026 the Google Store sells a refurbished Pixel 8 from $389. [10][25]

Does the Pixel 11 run GrapheneOS?

Not as of Oct. 15, 2026. It isn't on the supported list. [1]
