The Linux systems on these phones
- Sailfish OS from Jolla, which calls it "a Linux-based European alternative," runs native Qt apps and Android apps through its AppSupport layer. - Ubuntu Touch, maintained by the volunteer UBports community, has its own OpenStore. - Nura, called postmarketOS until Sept. 27, 2026, is based on Alpine Linux and aims to keep phones useful for longer. - PureOS on Purism's Librem 5 is, Purism says, "not based on Android or iOS." - FuriOS on Furi Labs' FLX1s+ is a Linux system with hardware switches for the microphone, camera and modem/GPS. Android apps on a Linux phone
Each system handles Android apps differently. Sailfish OS uses Jolla's Android AppSupport, which needs the Sailfish OS licence and which Jolla says can't guarantee 100% compatibility. Ubuntu Touch, Nura and PureOS use Waydroid, an Android container; UBports warns that apps relying on Google's Play Integrity or SafetyNet, "such as banking apps, are unlikely to run." Recent changes
- PINE64 said in August 2025 that the PinePhone Pro "is officially discontinued" because it "didn't sell well enough," and that it planned to keep the original PinePhone on sale. - Jolla's new Jolla Phone has shipped since July 8, 2026, in limited batches, to the EU, UK, Norway and Switzerland. - postmarketOS became Nura in September 2026 and moved to nura.eco. Questions people ask
Can a Linux phone replace my Android phone?
For some people. UBports, for example, says Ubuntu Touch is not a drop-in Android or iOS replacement: the app catalog is smaller, banking apps are the most commonly missed category, and many mainstream apps have no native version. [2]
Can I buy a Linux phone in the US?
Some ship to the US and some don't. Jolla ships the Jolla Phone only to the EU, UK, Norway and Switzerland. Check each phone's page in the table for where it ships. [14]
Is postmarketOS still around?
Yes, under a new name. The project announced on Sept. 27, 2026 that it is now called Nura. [3]
