China-edition phones: what a China ROM means for Google, warranty and US use

Checked against the makers' own pages · Last reviewed October 15, 2026

Chinese phone makers often ship different software in mainland China than abroad; the China edition of a phone's software is often called a "China ROM". Google support differs: Huawei's phones have no Google services at all, and Honor's China MagicOS has a Google Play services switch that Honor says needs a network outside China, while Xiaomi's global spec pages list Google features. Warranties from Xiaomi, OnePlus and Honor are tied to the country or region of purchase. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]

China edition vs global edition

Makers give the same phone a different system in China. Examples from the makers' own spec pages:

PhoneChina editionGlobal edition
OnePlus 15ColorOS 16.0, based on AndroidOxygenOS 16.0 based on Android 16 (US)
vivo X300 ProOriginOS 6 developed on Android 16OriginOS 6, Android 16
Huawei Mate 80 ProHarmonyOS 6.0EMUI 15.0

The name can be the same in both regions, as with vivo's OriginOS 6, so the system name alone doesn't tell you which edition you have. Xiaomi's global spec page for the Xiaomi 17 Ultra lists Xiaomi HyperOS 3 together with Google features such as "Circle to Search with Google" and "Google Gemini".

Huawei is a special case: its China editions run HarmonyOS, Huawei's own system that doesn't run Android apps natively, and its global editions run EMUI without Google services. See our pages on the Huawei Pura 80, Mate 80, Mate X7 and nova 14. [3][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]

Google services on China ROMs

GMS (Google Mobile Services) is Google's package of the Play Store, Google sign-in, Google Maps and Google's push messaging. What China editions do about it differs by maker:

- Huawei: Huawei says that because of Google's licensing, its phones from the Mate 30 series onward come without GMS or Google apps, and that using Google apps depends on Google's licensing, not on Huawei's own services. - Honor: Honor's China support page for MagicOS 10 says to turn on the "Google Play services" switch under Settings > Users and accounts, make sure the phone is on a network outside China, then search the app store for overseas apps. Honor notes this may increase battery use. - Xiaomi, OnePlus/OPPO, vivo: we did not find a current official page from these makers on Google services in their China editions. User guides describe settings switches, but check the specific phone before you rely on Google apps.

A China edition without working Google services behaves much like a de-Googled phone: apps that need Google Play services may not run. See our guides to microG and banking apps. [1][2]

Warranty

Buying abroad usually means no local warranty:

- Xiaomi says "the after-sales services shall be limited to the country or region of the original purchase," unless law or Xiaomi says otherwise. Its International Warranty Service covers designated models only, in the markets listed for each model. - OnePlus says its US limited warranty "is only valid within the original country or region of purchase" and that it offers after-sales help only in official sales regions. - Honor says its UK warranty applies to products bought in the UK: "If the Product is purchased in other countries, this Warranty is invalid and not covered in the United Kingdom." - vivo offers an International Warranty Service for designated models in the countries listed for each model. For the X300 and X300 Ultra the list includes mainland China, Hong Kong, India and several European countries, but not the United States. - Huawei equipment is on the FCC Covered List; see our Huawei phone pages for what that means for buying one in the US. Will a China phone work in the US?

Two things to check:

- Bands. A phone only connects where it supports the radio bands your carrier uses. T-Mobile, for example, lists LTE bands 4, 5, 66, 12 and 71 and 5G bands n2/n25, n41, n71 and mmWave bands. Compare the maker's band list for the exact model with your carrier; see our guide to phone bands and US carriers. - FCC rules. Radio devices may be imported into the US only if they have an FCC equipment authorization or meet one of the exceptions in 47 CFR 2.1204, such as bringing in "three or fewer radio frequency devices" for personal use, not for sale, within the categories the rule lists. Huawei equipment is on the FCC Covered List and can't get new FCC authorizations.

AT&T says devices that don't use its technology and bands can't use its network, and Verizon checks each phone's compatibility by device ID. Ask your carrier before buying. See also our guide to importing a phone to the US. [16][17][18][19][20][21]

Where to buy a China-edition phone

Makers' China stores list the China editions; for example, Huawei's Vmall listed the Pura 80 Ultra at ¥9,999 on Oct. 15, 2026 (shown as temporarily out of stock). Outside China, third-party exporters resell China editions. For example, Giztop lists the Pura 80 Ultra as the "Chinese edition" without Google Mobile Service or the Google Play store, and says it supports English and more than 30 languages. Giztop's shipping page lists DHL/UPS delivery to the United States in 5-7 days and says it may not know the customs duties in your country. These are third-party sellers; we have not tested them, and the warranty limits above apply. [22][23][24]

Questions people ask

Do Chinese phones have Google Play?

China editions don't come ready for Google. Huawei's phones since the Mate 30 have no Google services. Honor's China MagicOS 10 has a Google Play services switch that Honor says needs a network outside China. Global editions are set up for Google; Xiaomi's global Xiaomi 17 Ultra page lists Google features. [1][2][3]

Is the warranty valid if I buy a phone in China?

Usually not in the US. Xiaomi limits after-sales service to the country or region of purchase, OnePlus says its warranty is only valid in the original country or region, and Honor's UK warranty excludes phones bought in other countries. [4][5][6]

Is OxygenOS the same as ColorOS?

OnePlus uses different names: the US OnePlus 15 runs OxygenOS 16.0 based on Android 16, while the China OnePlus 15 runs ColorOS 16.0. [7][8]
