Phones you de-Google yourself
Checked against the makers' own pages · Last reviewed October 15, 2026
These phones come with Google's Android, but their bootloader (the startup lock that decides which system may run) can be unlocked, so you can replace Google's system with one that leaves Google out: GrapheneOS, CalyxOS, /e/OS, LineageOS or iodéOS. You do the work yourself: you unlock the bootloader, which erases the phone, then install the new system from a computer. The table shows the models we track; the first section shows which systems officially support each one. [1][2][3][4][5]

Which system supports which phone
Each project keeps its own list of supported models. As of Oct. 15, 2026, these are the phones on our site that each project lists:
| Phone | GrapheneOS | CalyxOS | /e/OS | LineageOS | iodéOS |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pixel 10 | Yes | No | No | Yes | No |
| Pixel 10a | Yes | Yes | No | Yes | No |
| Pixel 9 | Yes | Yes | Community build | Yes | Yes |
| Pixel 9a | Yes | Yes | Community build | Yes | Yes |
| Pixel 8 | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| SHIFTphone 8 | No | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Motorola Signature 27 | Planned (2027) | No | No | No | No |
No means the model isn't on that project's list today. /e/OS sorts its builds into official ones, which it says went through full testing and can be used every day, and community ones, which it offers on a best-effort basis with no guarantee. The lists also cover other models, such as Pro and Fold versions, so check your exact model on the project's own page: GrapheneOS, CalyxOS, /e/OS, LineageOS, iodéOS.
The SHIFTphone 8 can also be bought without Google (see its page). The Motorola Signature 27 isn't supported by any of these systems yet. GrapheneOS has a partnership with Motorola, says the Signature 27 will be the first phone it supports from it, and expects that support sometime in 2027, hopefully in the first half. The five systems
- GrapheneOS supports Pixels only today, from the Pixel 6 to the Pixel 10 series and Pixel 10a. Google Play is optional: you can install it as an ordinary app, and GrapheneOS says it gets no special access. It installs from a web installer.
- CalyxOS supports Pixels from the Pixel 4a (5G) on (including the 10a but not the Pixel 10 or 10 Pro models), several Fairphone and Motorola moto g models, and the SHIFTphone 8. It offers microG, an open-source stand-in for Google Play services. It has a web installer and asks you to relock the bootloader after installing.
- /e/OS replaces Google services with microG and removes Google's apps, per its product description. Its device list marks each build official or community and links each model to its own page with install steps.
- LineageOS comes without Google apps; its wiki says licensing keeps them from being included, so you add them separately if you want them. Each model has its own install guide on the LineageOS wiki.
- iodéOS is based on LineageOS and includes microG. iodé offers an installer for Windows and Linux that covers most of its supported models, and warns that installing it yourself carries some risk.

Carrier unlocked is not bootloader unlocked
These are two different locks. A carrier unlock (also called a SIM unlock) lets the phone work on other networks. A bootloader unlock lets you install a different system. The LineageOS wiki notes that some carriers remove the SIM lock but still don't allow bootloader unlocking. So a used phone listed as unlocked may still be stuck with Google's system. More in carrier unlocked vs. bootloader unlocked.
Verizon Pixels: Verizon removes its network lock once a phone is paid off, or after 365 days of paid service for prepaid phones. That doesn't help here: CalyxOS says Verizon Pixels don't allow bootloader unlocking at all, so you can't install any of these systems on one, and asks you to make sure a secondhand Pixel didn't come from Verizon. GrapheneOS says carrier versions of Pixels have bootloader unlocking switched off; the carrier may be able to turn it back on remotely, but probably won't.
How to check a phone: turn on Developer options and look for the OEM unlocking switch. CalyxOS says that if you can turn it on, the phone allows bootloader unlocking; if it is greyed out, you may have a Verizon phone.
Buy from the maker. Google says every phone in the Google Store comes unlocked, and GrapheneOS advises buying a phone that isn't a carrier version. GrapheneOS says carrier-locked phones are mainly a US problem. [1][2][7][8][9][10][22]
Rather not do it yourself?
Some companies sell Pixels with GrapheneOS already installed; GrapheneOS says it isn't affiliated with any of them and recommends installing it yourself. See how to buy a GrapheneOS phone. The /e/OS device list has a Buy from Murena link for the Pixel 8 and the SHIFTphone 8. Phones sold without Google from the start are in de-Googled phones.

Questions people ask
Does unlocking the bootloader erase my phone?
Yes. GrapheneOS, LineageOS and /e/OS all warn that unlocking wipes all data on the phone, so back up first. [1][3][4]
Can I de-Google a Pixel bought from Verizon?
Not in practice. CalyxOS says Verizon Pixels don't allow bootloader unlocking, so no other system can be installed, even after Verizon removes its network lock. GrapheneOS says a carrier could lift the block remotely but probably won't. [1][7][8]
