How each handles apps and Google
- Gabb Phone 4 (US): Gabb says "No App Store. No social media. No internet browser," with "Only basic, preloaded apps." Gabb's support guide also describes a Gabb App Store in the parent's Gabb account, where a parent picks an extra app and the phone then downloads it. - docomo Kids Keitai KY-41C (Japan): calls and +Message chats only with contacts registered in advance, such as family. docomo says the phone is limited to calls, +Message and GPS, so it can't visit websites or post to social media. It isn't on Google's list of Google Play supported devices.
Popular kids' phones built on standard Google Android, such as Bark, Troomi and Pinwheel, aren't listed because they ship with Google: each lets parents allow apps from the Google Play Store. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
Location and parent controls
Gabb advertises GPS location updates and parental controls, including optional parent-managed contacts.
On the KY-41C, pulling the strap or sliding a switch sounds an alarm buzzer of about 100 dB and can call a parent. Parents can look up the phone's location with docomo's Imadoco Search service, which needs its own contract. Each phone page lists the plans and monthly costs. [1][2]
Other phones for children without Google
If you want a full smartphone for a child without Google, /e/OS includes parental controls that block inappropriate web content and apps by age, set screen-time limits and locate the phone. See de-Googled phones.
Minimalist phones are another option. Mudita pitches the Mudita Kompakt to parents as having no social media, and Light says the Light Phone III will never have social media, internet browsing, email, news or ads. See minimalist phones. [8][9][10]
