What it can and can't do

Mudita's built-in apps include phone, messages (SMS and MMS), offline maps with turn-by-turn voice guidance for walking, cycling or driving, weather, notes, a voice recorder, a chess game and an app manager. The 8MP camera takes photos that show in black and white on the E Ink screen but are "in full color when sent to other devices," Mudita says.

You can share the phone's data with other devices as a Wi-Fi hotspot. MuditaOS K 1.6 (August 2026) added voicemail on supported networks, "particularly in the United States and North America," and support for 38 keyboard languages.

There is no WhatsApp or Signal app built in. Mudita says the Kompakt "does have a built-in app for core SMS and MMS messaging support" and that added messaging apps "will depend on technical feasibility and user feedback."

A dedicated privacy switch, which Mudita calls Offline+ Mode, cuts the microphones and cellular modem in hardware and turns off the camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth in software. [1][2][3][4]

Where it is sold and how to get one

Mudita sells the Kompakt from its online store. Orders shipping to the US or Canada get the North American version; all other countries get the Global version. Mudita says you can ask its support team for a custom order if you want the other version.

On Oct. 15, 2026, the store listed the North American version at $399.00 with free shipping. When Mudita started regular sales in May 2025, it listed $439 for the North American version and €439 for the Global version, so the current price is lower.

Mudita offers a 2-year warranty. The store page showed a promotion with a 30-day return window; Mudita's standard return period is 14 days. [1][5][6]

Will it work in the US?

Mudita publishes separate band lists for its two versions. The North American version, which Mudita says is "FCC and PTCRB certified," supports:

Mudita doesn't publish a list of approved US carriers for the North American version; it tells you to compare your carrier's bands with this list. For the Global version, Mudita says its tests in Chicago, Detroit and Orlando "confirmed that the Global version of Mudita Kompakt works with major networks like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon." Mudita still recommends the North American version for US and Canadian users, and the Global version for frequent travelers.

The phone has a nano-SIM slot, a hybrid slot (second nano-SIM or microSD card) and an eSIM. [1][5][7]

Apps and Google

MuditaOS K has no Google apps, no Google Play Services and no app store. Mudita says it is "based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP)," so you can install Android app files (APKs) yourself through the Mudita Center desktop app for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Mudita warns that sideloaded apps "are not optimized for Kompakt's unique E Ink screen and may not always work as intended," and that apps that depend on Google services "will likely not function correctly." It does not guarantee any third-party app. [1]

Software support

Mudita promises "5 years of software and security updates." The latest version we found is MuditaOS K 1.6, which Mudita announced on Aug. 27, 2026, rolling out in batches. Its support site notes that 1.6.1 is the version that reached all users. [1][3][8]
