Japanese flip phones: keitai and garakei
Checked against the makers' own pages · Last reviewed October 15, 2026
Japanese carriers still sell flip phones, which people in Japan call keitai or garakei. The ones on our site are Kyocera's DIGNO Keitai KY-42C (docomo) and DIGNO Keitai 4 (SoftBank and Y!mobile), Sharp's AQUOS Keitai 4 (SoftBank and Y!mobile) and docomo's Kids Keitai KY-41C. None of them is on Google's list of Google Play devices. Japan requires new phones to be sold without a SIM lock, but these phones are built for Japanese networks: none of them has the LTE bands our rule looks for on Verizon, AT&T or T-Mobile. What "keitai" and "garakei" mean
Keitai (携帯, also written ケータイ) is the Japanese word for a mobile phone, as in keitai denwa (携帯電話), and carriers use it for their non-smartphone lineups: docomo files the KY-42C under "ドコモ ケータイ" (docomo keitai).
Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) explains the other name in its 2019 white paper. Japan's feature-rich phones evolved in their own way, which, it notes, is said to have made them harder to sell in the world market. So they came to be called "Galapagos keitai" (ガラパゴスケータイ), or garakei (ガラケー) for short. MIC says the word now means any phone that isn't a smartphone, that is, a feature phone. [1][2][3]
The Japanese flip phones on our site
| Phone | Maker | Sold by | LTE bands in Japan | LTE bands listed for use abroad |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DIGNO Keitai KY-42C | Kyocera | NTT docomo (since March 10, 2023) | 1, 3, 19 | 1, 3, 5, 12 |
| DIGNO Keitai 4 | Kyocera | SoftBank (since Sept. 30, 2022), Y!mobile (since Nov. 1, 2022) | 1, 3, 8 | 1, 2, 3, 4, 8 |
| AQUOS Keitai 4 | Sharp | SoftBank (since Oct. 28, 2022), Y!mobile | 1, 3, 8 | 1, 3, 8 |
| Kids Keitai KY-41C | Kyocera, for docomo | NTT docomo (since Feb. 24, 2023) | 1, 19 | None listed |
The first three are clamshell (folding) flip phones with a 3.4-inch main screen. The KY-41C is a children's phone with a 3.4-inch touchscreen (docomo's manual calls the display a touch panel), not a flip, and it takes only an eSIM (a built-in digital SIM). docomo lists English and Japanese as display and input languages for the KY-42C, and only Japanese input for the KY-41C. None of the four has 5G.

What they run
These are feature phones with built-in functions, not smartphones. docomo's KY-42C manual, for example, covers the phone, docomo mail, +Message, PC mail, a web browser, the camera and a calendar. Google's list of Google Play supported devices (supported_devices.csv, checked Oct. 15, 2026) has no entry for the KY-42C, the DIGNO Keitai 4 (A203KC), the AQUOS Keitai 4 (A206SH) or the KY-41C.
The KY-42C's software is Android-based: the same manual sends owners to docomo's "Android products" software update page. That doesn't give you Google Play or Google's apps. Each phone page lists the built-in apps its maker or carrier describes. [8][21]
Japan's SIM-free rule
MIC's guideline on SIM locks, revised in August 2021, bans them in principle. Phones newly released on or after Oct. 1, 2021 must be sold without a SIM lock unless the carrier has a legitimate reason to set one. From Oct. 1, 2023, the rule covers every phone sold (MIC summary, PDF).
The carriers say the same for their own phones. docomo says models newly released on or after Aug. 27, 2021 have no SIM lock, so no unlock is needed. SoftBank says the models it released from June 2021 on, except the Xperia 1 III, are SIM-free. All four phones above came out in 2022 or 2023.
SIM-free means the phone accepts another carrier's SIM. It doesn't add the radio bands another country's networks use, which is the real problem in the US. [3][4][7][9][18][23][24]
Why they don't work in the US
A phone needs the right LTE bands to connect to a network. The US carriers publish theirs: T-Mobile lists LTE bands 4, 5 and 66 plus Extended Range bands 12 and 71; AT&T lists 2, 4/66, 5, 12/17/29 and 30; Verizon says its 4G LTE network "uses Band 13." Our database rule asks for a mid band plus the carrier's low band (see phone bands and US carriers):
- DIGNO Keitai 4: SoftBank lists bands 2 and 4 for use abroad, but no low band (12, 13, 17 or 71).
- KY-42C: docomo lists bands 5 and 12 for use abroad, but no mid band (2, 4 or 66).
- AQUOS Keitai 4: bands 1, 3 and 8 only, none of which the US carriers list.
- KY-41C: bands 1 and 19 only, no bands for use abroad, and a docomo eSIM.
SoftBank's band sheets add that even where a band is marked, it doesn't guarantee the phone works on networks other than SoftBank's. Calls are a second hurdle: the FCC says the US 3G shutdowns cut off calls on 3G phones and on certain older 4G phones without VoLTE (voice over LTE). [3][7][10][11][12][13][14][25]
3G shutdowns: old garakei no longer connect
All three big Japanese carriers have now switched off 3G:
- au (KDDI) ended its 3G service, CDMA 1X WIN, on March 31, 2022. KDDI said 3G phones and phones without au VoLTE could no longer be used from April 1, 2022.
- SoftBank ended 3G on April 15, 2024. After the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, it kept 3G running in Ishikawa Prefecture for residents there until July 31, 2024.
- NTT docomo ended FOMA, its 3G service, and the i-mode mobile internet service on March 31, 2026. FOMA had run since October 2001 and i-mode since February 1999. docomo's KY-42C spec page notes that 3G can't be used from April 1, 2026.
In the US, the FCC says AT&T began phasing out 3G in February 2022, T-Mobile shut down its 3G UMTS network on July 1, 2022, and Verizon planned to finish its shutdown by Dec. 31, 2022. So an older 3G-only garakei bought secondhand has no 3G network to use in Japan or on those US networks. [3][15][16][17][25]
Where to get one: how people import them
The carriers sell these phones in Japan, on Japanese-language sites. Outside Japan, importers resell them. For example, Kyoex, a third-party online store, listed a new, unlocked KY-42C at $285 with free shipping on Oct. 15, 2026, and says it sets phones to English before shipping. We have not checked that seller.
When you import a phone:
- FCC: the FCC's import rule, 47 CFR 2.1204, allows "three or fewer radio frequency devices" imported "for the individual's personal use" and not for sale, within the device categories it lists.
- Customs: US Customs and Border Protection says that "when you buy goods from foreign sources, you become the importer," and the importer pays any duty owed. See our guide to importing a phone to the US.
- Use: check the bands above first. With the bands these phones have, a US SIM may not connect at all.
Questions people ask
What is a Japanese flip phone called?
Keitai, the everyday word for a mobile phone, or garakei, short for "Galapagos keitai". Japan's communications ministry says garakei now means any phone that isn't a smartphone. [1]
Can I use a Japanese flip phone in the US?
Not reliably. The current models list mostly Japanese LTE bands: none has a mid band plus a low band of a US carrier. Compare the bands before buying. [3][10][11][12][13][14]
Do Japanese flip phones have Google Play or LINE?
The four on our site aren't on Google's list of Google Play devices. They are feature phones with built-in functions; each phone page lists what its maker or carrier describes. [8]
