What it is
The KY-42C is a classic Japanese clamshell "keitai" (feature phone). Kyocera builds it and docomo sells it. The main screen is a 3.4-inch FWVGA LCD, and a small 0.9-inch OLED sub-display on the outside shows the time and notifications.
Kyocera says it meets 13 MIL-STD-810H test items, is waterproof (IPX5/IPX8) and dustproof (IP5X), and can be cleaned with foaming hand soap or alcohol wipes. The 1,500 mAh battery is removable.
docomo's online shop listed the KY-42C at ¥45,430 on Oct. 15, 2026. A camera-less version, the KY-43C, was listed at ¥44,880. [1][2][7][8]

Apps and Google
The KY-42C is not a smartphone and has no app store. docomo's manual lists the built-in apps: phone, contacts, docomo mail, +Message, PC mail (email), a web browser, camera, calendar, calculator, alarm, timers, world clock, notes, FM radio, voice recorder, a weather app and the OfficeSuite document viewer. It does not mention Google Play or any Google app.
Google's list of Google Play supported devices (checked Oct. 15, 2026) has no entry for the KY-42C. docomo's manual points to its "Android products" software-update page for this phone, so the software is Android-based, but neither Google's list nor the manual shows Google Play or any Google app on it.
Kyocera says the old i-mode service and i-appli apps do not work on it. [3][5][7]
Where it is sold and how to get one
docomo is the only official seller. Its online shop listed the KY-42C on Oct. 15, 2026 at ¥45,430 (tax included), with white and black "in stock" and red "sold out". The shop offers a device-only purchase ("機種だけ(白ロム)購入") as well as new lines and upgrades, but it is a Japanese-language store for docomo customers in Japan. docomo's English product page says the phone is "On sale now".
Outside Japan, importers sell it. Kyoex, a third-party online store, listed a new SIM-unlocked KY-42C at $285 with free shipping on Oct. 15, 2026, and says it sets phones to English before shipping. We have not checked that seller; buying from an importer means no docomo warranty. [2][4][9]
Will it work in the US?
docomo publishes the KY-42C's bands. In Japan it uses LTE bands 1, 3 and 19. For use abroad, docomo lists LTE bands 1, 3, 5 and 12, plus GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz. It has no 5G.
To compare these with your carrier's bands, see our guide to US carrier bands. docomo does not say the phone works on any US network. Calls on 4G use VoLTE (voice over LTE), and no US carrier approval for this model is published, so check with your carrier before buying. docomo says its own 3G service can no longer be used from April 1, 2026.
