Minimalist phones and dumbphones
Checked against the makers' own pages · Last reviewed October 15, 2026
Minimalist phones and dumbphones are built to do less: calls, texts and a few tools, without the feeds and app stores of a smartphone. They differ in how far they go. The Light Phone III will never have social media or a web browser, while the Mudita Kompakt has no app store but lets you sideload some Android apps. The table lists every model we track. [1][2]

What they leave out
- Light Phone III: Light says it "will never have social media, internet browsing, email, news, or ads." - Mudita Kompakt: an E Ink phone that Mudita says has "no tracking, no ads, and no distracting apps," with a button that cuts off the microphones and the GSM modem. It has no app store, but you can sideload some Android apps with the Mudita Center desktop app. - Punkt. MP02: a keypad phone that Punkt says has "No browser, email, app store, or sideloading"; only Punkt-authorized apps such as its Pigeon messenger are supported. [1][2][3]
Google or no Google
"Minimalist" doesn't always mean de-Googled. Some minimalist phones aren't listed here because they ship with Google: the Minimal Phone 2 comes with the Play Store and Google Play services, and Google Maps is the default navigation app on the Wisephone II.
Mudita's MuditaOS K is based on the Android Open Source Project but runs "without Google services," and Mudita warns that apps requiring Google services may perform inconsistently. Punkt says the MP02 runs "a custom-built, locked-down operating system." For a full smartphone without Google, see de-Googled phones. [2][3][4][5]
Questions people ask
What is the difference between a dumbphone and a minimalist phone?
The phones here sit on a range. Some, like the Light Phone III, rule out social media, browsing and email entirely; others, like the Mudita Kompakt, have no app store but let you sideload some Android apps from a computer. Compare what each phone allows in the table. [1][2]
Can I use WhatsApp on a minimalist phone?
Not on the Light Phone III. Light says there is "not currently" a way to call or message with Signal or WhatsApp on it, and Punkt says the MP02 doesn't support app installation or sideloading. The Mudita Kompakt lets you sideload Android apps with the Mudita Center desktop app, but Mudita warns that apps requiring Google services may perform inconsistently and doesn't guarantee third-party apps will work.
