Where it is sold and how to get one
Purism's docs say new and refurbished Purism products "are only available on our shop," and that Purism ships "worldwide, except to countries that are subject of trade sanctions imposed by the USA." US orders go by USPS or FedEx; international orders go by DHL or USPS Priority Mail International. Purism can't ship to APO/FPO military addresses because of lithium battery rules. International buyers pay any customs duties and local taxes.
As of Oct. 15, 2026 the Librem 5 is $799 and listed "In stock." Purism's availability chart (updated April 22, 2026) gives a lead time of 10 business days. Purism says it puts in the modem for your shipping region (North America, Europe, or Asia/Australia). Because of a shortage of A1 modems, phones shipped to North America get "an alternate modem," and Purism says it will send a replacement modem free on request.
Liberty Phone: the Liberty Phone is a premium Librem 5 with 4 GB RAM, 128 GB storage, and electronics made at Purism's US facility. It is $1,749 (on sale from $1,999). The shop page shows it "In stock" as of Oct. 15, 2026, while Purism's availability chart (updated April 22, 2026) still lists it as available on backorder. The older Librem 5 USA "has been discontinued and is replaced by the Liberty Phone," according to Purism's shop.
Purism also sells an optional phone plan, Librem AweSIM, for $99 a month. [1][2][3][4][7][8]

Will it work in the US?
Purism's supported-networks page lists, for the US: T-Mobile "Yes" (several T-Mobile-based carriers also work), AT&T "No" (though Purism's AweSIM service, which runs on AT&T, is supported), and Verizon "No," because Verizon "requires substantial licensing fees for devices to be included on its network."
The Americas modem (BroadMobi BM818-A1) supports LTE bands 2, 3, 4, 5, 12, 13, 17, 25, 26, 41 and 66. It is a 4G modem; Purism says the phones accept 5G SIM cards but are limited by the modem's abilities. Purism's Librem 5 shop page says that "due to supplier shortages with A1 modems, devices shipped to North America will be configured with an alternate modem"; the page does not name that modem or list its bands, so ask Purism which bands your phone will have. Compare bands with your carrier using our bands and US carriers guide. [1][5]
Apps and Google
The Librem 5 runs PureOS, which Purism describes as "not based on Android or iOS." Apps come from the PureOS Store or the apt command-line tool. There is no Google Play Store and no Google services.
Purism's docs say Android apps "are not natively installed within PureOS," but Waydroid (a container that runs Android) makes it possible. You choose a plain image without Google services or one with Google apps, and can add microG later. Purism notes it "does not have any control over the quality or security of Waydroid or Android applications," and neither is covered by its warranty. [2][6]
Software support
Purism says: "we will continue to provide security updates, privacy improvements, bug fixes, and new features… for the lifetime of your device." It does not give an end date.
Purism's docs say all Librem 5 phones moved to PureOS 10 ("Byzantium") in November 2021. The PureOS website now lists Version 11 as its download. The Librem 5 can also run postmarketOS, which lists it in its community device category. [2][9][10][11]
What's different
- Hardware kill switches cut power to Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, the cellular modem, and the microphone and cameras. Turning off all three also turns off GPS.
- Replaceable parts: the battery is user-replaceable, and the modem sits on a replaceable M.2 card, so you can swap it for another region's modem.
- Smart card reader for 3FF (microSIM-size) smart cards.
- Convergence: with a monitor, keyboard and mouse, PureOS runs the same desktop apps as Purism's laptops, according to Purism.
