Where it is sold and how to get one
Commodore sells the Callback 8020 only through its own online store, as a pre-order. As of Nov. 7, 2026 the store shows these prices before tax, in US dollars:
- Starlight Edition (clear blue), BASIC Beige, SX Silver or ProtoPET White: $399 with "Eco-Validated" memory, or $449 with "Premium" memory. The store shows the $399 price marked down from $499 for the Starlight Edition and from $449 for the other colors.
- Founders Edition (PVD gold, with extras such as a case and earphones): $640, marked down from $699.
Both memory options are 4 GB RAM and 64 GB storage. Commodore says the Eco-Validated option uses "remanufactured" memory chips from "second life silicon", tested to the original factory specifications and covered by the same warranty; the Premium option uses new chips.
Shipping: the store says "497 / 500 pre-order units left in Batch 26" and gives a "Batch 26 ship estimate: Dec - Feb" as of Nov. 7, 2026. In a Nov. 5, 2026 post, Commodore said official production "ramps up in early November" and that the first pre-orders "hit doorsteps in late November and early December"; the store's Dec - Feb estimate is for Batch 26, the batch now taking orders. You are charged when you order, and Commodore says you can cancel any time before shipping for a full refund.
US buyers: Commodore is a US company and sells to the US directly. It says it ships worldwide "with a couple of exceptions", that shipping is free at launch for a limited time, and that US sales tax is added at checkout where required. Commodore's product page says the phone "has not yet completed the FCC equipment authorization" and that pre-orders will not ship until that authorization is granted. [1][2][4][5]

Will it work in the US?
Commodore lists these bands: LTE-FDD 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 20, 25, 26, 28, 66 and 71; LTE-TDD 38, 40 and 41; plus 2G and 3G bands. It says VoLTE (voice calls over 4G, needed on US networks) is supported. There is no 5G; Commodore says the phone "supports up to 4G VoLTE + Wi-Fi."
That list includes the main LTE bands of Verizon (13), AT&T (2, 4, 12, 17, 66) and T-Mobile (2, 4, 66, 71). Commodore says "carrier support can vary by region, plan, whitelist, and VoLTE provisioning" and that the phone "does not currently support Band 14 for first responders." It runs an online compatibility checker and says it will give a full refund within 14 days of receipt if the checker says your carrier works and the phone does not. No US carrier sells it or has announced certification, so check with your carrier too. Our bands and US carriers guide explains how bands work.
The phone takes two physical SIM cards and has no eSIM. [1][2]
Apps and Google
The Callback runs Sailfish OS, the Linux system from Finnish company Jolla. Commodore says the software "was developed with Jolla," and Jolla's own June 16, 2026 press release confirms the phone "runs on Sailfish OS." Commodore says the phone is "de-Googled and does not include Google Play Services or the Google Play Store." No Google account is needed to set it up.
Android apps: Sailfish runs Android apps in a sandboxed layer called AppSupport. Commodore says AppSupport runs "99%" of Android apps, an estimate it says came from Jolla. Commodore's app blog says apps that need Google Play Services see microG (an open-source stand-in for Google's services) instead. Commodore lists the likely exceptions: apps that need Play Integrity checks or Google device certification, "including most banking apps, Google Wallet tap-to-pay, Android Auto, and some streaming apps." It says some banking apps such as BankID and Swish launch and run, and offers a money-back guarantee if it can't get your banking app working.
Where apps come from: Commodore's own curated app store, the Commostore. WhatsApp comes preinstalled (it can be removed), and Signal, Telegram, Uber and Lyft are offered when you first set the phone up. You can also sideload Android APK files from a microSD card or USB-C cable.
What is blocked: Commodore blocks all web browsers and the major social media apps "at the system level," and says these blocks can't be turned off. Its list: Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, X, YouTube, Reddit, Kick, Twitch, Discord, Roblox and Tumblr. Apps can still open the login pages they need, without an address bar. Email and work apps are not in the Commostore, but Commodore says you can install an email app by sideloading. RCS messaging is not supported, and group MMS is not supported yet. Our WhatsApp dumbphones guide compares other phones that run WhatsApp. [1][3][6]
Software support
Commodore has not published the Sailfish OS version or how many years of updates the phone will get. Its FAQ mentions future firmware updates, for example if Android Auto support ever becomes possible. Commodore also says the design, specifications and features "are not final and are subject to change" before release. [1]
What's different
- Keypad first: the 3.25-inch main screen is a touchscreen, but Commodore says touch is turned off by default and can be turned on when an app needs it. You type with a T9-style keypad and predictive text.
- Outer display and lights: a 1.77-inch "VFD-style" outer screen shows the basics, and five colored "Dome LED" lights signal messages, charging and other events.
- Physical privacy switch on the back, plus an SOS/multi-function button.
- Removable battery: the 1850 mAh battery is user-swappable, and back covers snap on and off.
- Audio: a DAC (audio chip) from ESS and Cirrus Logic, FM radio, and Commodore 64 "SID" ringtones; Commodore's Aug. 30, 2026 update shows a 3.5 mm headphone jack.
- No NFC and no fingerprint reader: Commodore says it left out NFC on purpose, so the phone can't do tap-to-pay, and unlocking uses a PIN or password.
- Commodore extras: classic Commodore 64 games, Snake, and an app to control a Commodore 64 Ultimate computer over Wi-Fi.
